Bring me to Life: A Banger from The Early 2000s

Evanescence

You can’t have a conversation about early 2000s Rock music without mentioning Evanescence. I’ll go out on a limb and say Evanescence has one of the most recognizable songs from the early 2000s. Evanescence was founded by Amy Lee (singer) and Ben Moody (guitarist) in 1994. The band’s talent was not recognized until 2003 when they released their globally-known hit single “Bring Me to Life” featuring Paul McCoy. “Bring Me to Life” showcased how well Amy’s singing and keyboard talents meshed with Ben’s guitar playing. I’d think a vast amount of people would agree which is probably why the song’s music video has amassed over one billion views on Youtube.

Bring Me to Life

“Bring Me to Life” starts with eerily sad piano keys and background music that matches the sound. Amy begins her first verse singing in a high pitch yet calm tone. You can tell that she’s only heating up and will hit higher notes later in the song. She does exactly that in the pre-chorus and chorus. For the rest of the song where Amy sings, she ditches the calmer tone that was used in the beginning of the song. Towards the end of the song, Paul McCoy has a rapping verse where his tone matches the feeling of the song. The song ends with Amy singing the chorus and holding the note for the last word of the song.

Honest Opinion

I honestly was never certain about what “Bring Me to Life” was really about. I thought the piano keys and the different ways Amy Lee sang in the song were cool. Based on the lyrics, it seems like Amy is experiencing a time where she’s drowning within herself and she’s pleading for someone to help her. After reading her interview responses about the song with Genius, the lyrics are starting to make much more sense. Amy said the song was inspired by her first meeting with her husband. By looking into her eyes, he was able to tell that she wasn’t happy in life during that time. That moment had such a significant impact on her that she wrote this ABSOLUTE BANGER. Thank you Josh Hartzler (Amy’s husband)!
